The Men's Room

Gillette’s newest invention is the Proglide Styler. I’m sure you’ve seen the commercial for it… you know, the Masters of Style with Andre 3000,  Adrien Brody and Gael Garcia Bernal.

Anyway, I was pretty impressed with the concept of this new 3-in-1 trimmer/razor and was very curious to see if this trimmer could really accomplish the styles that the “Masters” were wearing. After all, as a barber I couldn’t help but think these styles looked more like the handy-work of one of my peers on set… just saying!

So, I picked this puppy up for $18.49 at Target.

My first impression of the Proglide Styler was that it was well designed and all the pieces seemed to work together. The trimmer portion powered by Braun (great brand!), delivered as much power as a battery operated trimmer can offer. Don’t expect to be able to handle heavy beard challenges, this is more for the quick “clean-up”.  The razor attaches neatly and effortlessly into the head of the trimmer and can be powered on to add the vibration while shaving. And of course,  if you are familiar with the Fusion Proglide, it has the added single blade for sideburns and minor detailing.

My overall opinion of this is trimmer is that it’s “cool looking”, but it just doesn’t perform that way. It’s marketed as a tool that can really do great beard trimming and styling work, but misses the mark. For a quick clean-up especially when traveling, it’s not a “bad” choice. But priced at almost $20 before the hefty price of $20 replacement cartridges I feel you can do better with 2 separate tools.

Schick released something like this in their Quattro line a few years ago. It had the razor, single blade, and trimmer. I bought it for the trimmer, quite honestly. It does a fine job at keeping my sideburns in line.

Are there any Barbers that you know of in the NYC area that subscribe to your theory of what a trip to the Barber should be? I wear my Head Bald and I am looking for a Barber to Prepare and Shave my head with a Razor who covers all the details like you. Please Help? If you can. Thanks!
