The Men's Room

WAHL 5 star series shaver1WAHL has been around for a very long time making superior grooming tools. And this one – WAHL 5-Star “Super Close” Shaver Shaper, is certainly no exception. However, I have been receiving a great deal of feedback from readers who have experienced irritation in the form of ingrown hairs after their barbers used this tool on them.

Of course, based on their YouTube video of how to use these trimmers, it is clear that it’s designed for “clean-up” only.

This shaver is simply a foil shaver with a few minor enhancements. With that being said, it is designed to get the beard or the head “super close”, and generally speaking it can cut the hair close enough to where it may fall below the skin-line. Unfortunately, for many men this will cause their hair to have a difficult time growing out of the skin since the hair is often curly or overly-curly (See: Ingrown Hairs? Here’s why!).

Sure, your barber wants to leave you with the closest and cleanest look, but at what cost?

So the next time your barber chooses to finish of your beard or head with this shaver, request that he “test” it out on a small area of the face or head first. Any reaction should appear within 3-5 days. If there are no signs of irritation, then you’re in the clear and that much the wiser.

Good luck!

I have this shaver and have experienced the same issues. After trying several other ways to shave, I found that the straight razoristhe best way toget a close shave, FOR ME. However, because its a liitle quicker, I do resort to the shaver(electric shave) from time to time. I just take Craig’s advice and stay with the grain or go across it, NOT against it.
    Thanks Craig!! Peace

I use the Wahl 5 star shaver on my full head and beard, and have been using it daily for years and years. I love it. I’ve replaced the foil and blades a number of times over the years and never experienced an ingrown hair. I am buying a new one because the battery is finally wearing down and my kids were in my bathroom and dropped it on the floor, breaking the foil and now the charging plug doesn’t connect properly. (no fault of the product!)

I also have a braun 5 series and it’s good but takes longer and doesn’t shave as close. I am more than happy to buy a new one after so many years of good service. Excellent product!!!

Why does the foil for the close shaver break so often? I’m on my third one in about four months. I shave perhaps every other day using it as a finisher for that naked scalp feel.

Hi Obi, that’s pretty unusual for that to be the case. I’ve had mine for months and have not had to change it yet.I would suggest deferring back to the manufacture to see if it can be replaced.

Well for my experience, to get a baby butt smooth shave I would do 2 shaving passes with a double edge, straight or disposable razors with only one blade. One pass with the grain and another across. After that, let the face air dry for a little bit and then use the wahl 5 star shaver to finish the job because 5 star shaver can go any direction of the grain including against. Now that’s what I call bump free shaving.

Which one shaves closer wahl super shaver or the wahl balding?

    • Craig the Barber March 23, 2016 at 1:08 pm

The super shaver for sure will offer a closer shave! However, keep in mind that a very close shaves aren’t ideal for everyone.

    I don’t shave,

I use a scissors for everything,

    That have been said,

I would try an aerosol shaver lubricant and see if that helps your electric shaving experience.

Just purchased the Wahl Super close shaver shaper in January used it daily for my head and beard and here it is the 1st week of february and the foil broke. Was certain that it would have cut my head had I not pull back to see what that noise was. Is this normal?

    • Craig the Barber March 2, 2018 at 12:05 am

Hi Andrew, great question! Fortunately, I have not experienced this with the Wahl Super Close. But, thankfully I am very aware of their great customer response to making up for these issues!
