Why EVERY guy should use hair conditioner!

Shampoo2

 Bad looking hair frustrates me.

But hair that looks bad because it isn’t being cared for, angers me… Especially if I’m the one who cuts it!

Hey guys, there is absolutely no hairstyle that will look good for very long if your hair is constantly dry. Not to mention, it’s down right almost impossible for me as a barber to give a great haircut if this is the case (almost, lol).

Here’s the skinny: Oil glands are a part of every hair root. This oil’s purpose is to keep each strand moist and protected. When the oil is not able to reach and cover the whole length of the strand, hair becomes dry and damaged. That’s why you need conditioners to nourish the entire strand, from the root to tip. The average guy should condition his hair at the very least 2-3x’s a week.

Here are few more benefits if I haven’t already convinced you…

  • It soothes the hair cuticle allowing it to reflect more light thereby making your hair appear shinier, naturally
  • Strengthens hair and prevents breakage
  • Works to help to restore some moisture lost in the hair strand
  • Improves the look and the results of a haircut

Here are a few that I like!

Any suggestions as which conditioner to use?

    Hey Craig,

I have oily hair do you still recommend using a conditioner? If so how often and what suggestions would you have for a good one to use?

    • Craig the Barber September 5, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Hello Lyndon, I can completely understand your hesitation. However, the use of a hair conditioner is still good for the overall health of your hair and scalp. Since you do struggle with oily hair I would suggest a little less conditioning than the average person so 1-2x’s a week is fine. Also, let me suggest an article I wrote here on TheMensRoom.com that may help you in the area of dealing with oily hair challenges. ~ Solutions for oily hair – https://themensroom.com/hair/solutions-for-oily-hair/

Lyndon, I hope this helps and thanks for the comment!

    Hi Craig,

I read somewhere that its better to use a conditioner in place of a shampoo, since conditioner has enough cleansers to clean your hair while helping it maintain all of its natural oils. Is this true?

    • Craig the Barber April 4, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Hi Brandon that’s a great question! As much as I would like so say that the information you were given is correct, it isn’t. A hair conditioner is designed to replenish the oils lost after your hair has been washed with a shampoo. So the perfect order is shampoo 1st, then conditioner 2nd. This is because the shampoo does the cleaning followed then by the re-moisturizing of the scalp done by the conditioner. I hope this helps!

Would coconut oil or butter work as a substitute?

    Thanks

Hi Aaron, unfortunately not. Both options will only coat the scalp and not provide proper moisture to condition the scalp. However, conditioners with the coconut oil ingredient added could help!

    Hello Craig,

How do I use a conditioner? Or when? Like should I apply it after washing the shampoo off or..?

    • Craig the Barber August 30, 2017 at 11:36 pm

For optimal performance, apply after your rinsed out your shampoo. Hope that helps!
